When a tooth fails to emerge fully through the gums and remains trapped beneath the tissue or bone, it is considered impacted. This condition can occur for various reasons, such as overcrowding in the mouth, abnormal tooth angulation or a lack of space in the dental arch. Impacted teeth can lead to a range of issues, including pain, infection and damage to adjacent teeth. Our oral surgeons and team often address these problems with specialized care to restore dental function and maintain your oral health.

Common Types of Impacted Teeth

The most commonly impacted teeth are the third molars, also known as wisdom teeth. These teeth are often the last to erupt and typically do not have enough space to grow in properly. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause pain, swelling or lead to infections and cysts. For these reasons, our oral surgeons may recommend removing them as a preventive measure.

Another type of tooth that may become impacted is the upper canine, or eye tooth. These are the pointed teeth located just beneath the eyes and play an important role in your bite and appearance. When these canines do not erupt correctly, it is usually due to crowding or misalignment. Left untreated, impacted canines can cause complications such as damage to nearby teeth or cyst formation.

Treatment for Impacted Canines

If your upper canines are impacted, our oral surgeons will first take diagnostic X-rays or 3D imaging to evaluate the position of the teeth. We will also assess whether enough space exists for proper eruption. If the tooth is likely to erupt naturally, we may surgically expose the impacted canine by removing the overlying gum tissue. In other cases, we may bond an orthodontic bracket with a small chain to the impacted tooth. This device works with orthodontic appliances to gently guide the tooth into its correct position.
