After your wisdom teeth removal, your healing process begins the moment you leave our office. While our oral surgeons and team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions and a care kit, knowing what to expect and how to manage your recovery at home is essential for a smooth and comfortable healing experience.
The First 24 Hours
Bleeding and mild discomfort are normal during the first day. We will place gauze pads over your extraction sites before you leave, and you should change them every 30 to 45 minutes or as directed. Bite down gently to help form blood clots, which are essential for proper healing. Avoid rinsing your mouth, spitting or drinking through a straw, as these actions can dislodge the clots and lead to complications such as dry socket.
Keep your head elevated, even while sleeping, to help control bleeding and reduce swelling. Apply an ice pack to your cheeks in 20-minute intervals — 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off — during the first 24 hours. This can minimize swelling and discomfort.
Pain Management & Activity
You will likely experience jaw stiffness and soreness, which can be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications. Take all medications as directed and avoid strenuous activity for at least 48 to 72 hours. Rest is critical during the early stages of healing.
After the first day, switch from ice to moist heat to help ease muscle stiffness in your jaw. Applying a warm compress for 20-minute intervals can improve circulation and comfort.
Oral Hygiene & Diet
You may gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water starting the day after surgery, unless otherwise instructed. Brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction sites. A soft diet is recommended — think smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes and soup. Avoid hot, crunchy, spicy or chewy foods for several days. Stay well hydrated, but avoid using straws.
Watching for Complications
Mild swelling, bruising and limited jaw movement are normal. However, contact Sonoma County Oral Surgery & Dental immediately if you experience severe pain, pus, persistent bleeding, fever or a foul taste in your mouth. These may be signs of an infection or dry socket, which may require additional treatment.
Your comfort and healing are our top priorities. Following these at-home care instructions will help you recover quickly and avoid complications.
